Sonia Michaels is a Senior Lecturer in the Humanities and Social Sciences Department at DigiPen Institute of
Technology. She earned her B.A. and M.A. in English from the University of Washington, and did post-graduate
work at the University of Victoria. She has taught English (writing and literature, with an emphasis on science
fiction/fantasy and women’s literature) and professional communication for 25+ years. Sonia’s current areas of
focus include career development (focusing primarily on the game industry), and the application of the
Humanities/Liberal Arts to game development education. Sonia has presented at GDC (2015, 2017), PaxDev
(2015, 2016), and GeekGirlCon (2017); she also organized and facilitated the career mentorship meetup at
GeekGirlCon 2017. She recently completed a chapter for Doctor Who: Twelfth Night (pending publication in
2018 by I.B. Tauris), and multiple entries for the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Sexism in American Cinema. In
the past year, she has also been a regular guest on the “Cheat Codes” podcast, and was recently featured on
the “GameDev Loadout” podcast. In addition to teaching, Sonia provides private career consulting services
through SoYouWantToMake.Games.
